Kanzanji Ropeway, Aerial tramway in Nishi-ku, Japan
Kanzanji Ropeway is an aerial tramway spanning 724 meters across Lake Hamana, connecting Hamanako Palpal amusement park with Mount Okusa station and museum. Two cabins with 49 seats each carry passengers over the lake on a roughly four-minute journey.
The ropeway was constructed and opened in 1960, creating a new link between Kanzanji Onsen and Mount Okusa. This installation became an important part of tourism development in the region at that time.
The Orgel Museum at the ropeway destination displays an extensive collection of music boxes and fairground organs from the 1800s. Visitors can see rare and ornate mechanical instruments that tell the story of how people enjoyed music before electricity.
Service begins in the morning and accommodates many visitors with two large cabins. It is best to visit on clear days to enjoy the views across the water.
This is the only aerial tramway system in Japan that crosses directly over a lake, suspending passengers about 94 meters above the water. The height and lakeside position offer passengers sweeping views during every ride.
