Monument to Perry's Landing

The granite monument stands 5.25 meters tall in Perry Park, featuring inscriptions commemorating the United States Navy Commodore Matthew Perry's arrival in Japan.

On July 14, 1853, Commodore Perry landed at Kurihama Beach to deliver President Fillmore's letter requesting Japan to end its isolation policy.

The monument's inscription was written by Hirobumi Ito, Japan's first Prime Minister, marking the beginning of formal diplomatic relations between Japan and the United States.

The memorial site includes Perry Memorial Museum, which displays historical artifacts and dioramas depicting the 1853 arrival of the black ships.

During World War II, the monument was toppled in February 1945 but remained intact, leading to its restoration in November of the same year.
