Samegai Post-town Historical Folk Museum

The Samegai Post-town Historical Folk Museum occupies a former post office building constructed in 1915 along the historic Nakasendo transportation route in Shiga Prefecture.

In 1843, Samegai served as the 61st post station on the Nakasendo route with 138 houses, hosting travelers between Kyoto and Edo with designated inns and services.

The museum exhibits display artifacts and documents that detail the daily operations of a post town, including the Toya-ba system for transferring goods during the Edo period.

Visitors can reach the museum by taking the JR Tokaido Line to Samegai Station and walking 500 meters, or driving five minutes from Maibara Interchange on National Route 21.

The museum building, designed by American architect William Merrell Vories, combines Japanese and Western architectural elements while preserving local historical records.
