Kannon-ji

Kannon-ji is a Buddhist temple at the base of a mountain in Shiga Prefecture, featuring a main hall, sanctuary gate, and bell tower. The buildings and grounds form a connected complex where visitors can move through and explore each structure.

The temple was destroyed by fire in 1504, but a 14th century statue of Bodhisattva Kannon survived the disaster. It was later rebuilt and has continued to serve as an important site of religious worship.

The name Kannon-ji refers to the goddess of mercy, who is the central figure of worship at this temple. Visitors can observe calligraphy works created by a notable artist from the Meiji period, which reflect the artistic life of the temple community.

Visitors can participate in zazen meditation sessions and choose their preferred seating posture during practice. The location at the base of a mountain makes it easy to reach on foot.

The garden transitions between dry and wet zones, with moss-covered areas becoming reflective pools when heavy rain falls. This seasonal transformation reveals how the space adapts to changing water levels and weather patterns.
