Sayram-Ugam National Park, National park in Turkistan Region, Kazakhstan
Sayram-Ugam National Park sits in the northern section of the Western Tian Shan mountains and covers 149,037 hectares across diverse terrain with several distinct ecological zones. The land contains more than 1,600 plant species and hundreds of bird species living in these varied habitats.
The park was created in 2006 when three separate state forest and wildlife management units merged into one protected area. This consolidation brought previously managed territories under a single conservation framework.
This protected land serves as a refuge for rare plant and animal species that shape how people understand mountain conservation. Visitors come here to witness species found nowhere else in the region.
The park has ten developed hiking and horseback riding trails covering 604 kilometers for different activity levels and interests. Entry points are located about 70 kilometers from the city of Shymkent and can be reached by vehicle.
Lake Susyngen sits at 1,700 meters elevation with a name that translates to 'water gone into earth' in the local language. The lake demonstrates how water disappears into underground systems in this mountain region.
