Charvak Lake, Mountain reservoir in Tashkent Region, Uzbekistan
Charvak Lake is a reservoir in Tashkent Region, eastern Uzbekistan, set between the Ugam, Pskem, and Chatkal mountain ranges. The shoreline stretches roughly 100 kilometers (62 miles) along the foothills of the Tian Shan Mountains.
The dam was completed in 1970 with a wall rising 168 meters (551 feet) high and flooded more than 150 archaeological sites. These included ancient settlements and burial grounds that now rest beneath the water.
The name emerged when the dam was completed and recalls the settlements that disappeared beneath the water. Families from the capital now visit the shores on weekends and swim in the clear lake formed by the reservoir.
The Charvak Oromgohi recreation area offers beach sections, water sports rental facilities, and lodging about an hour's drive from Tashkent. The route passes through mountain roads that are easily navigable in summer.
The Pyramid Hotel along the shore features green peaked roofs with built-in solar panels that echo the outlines of the nearby summits. The village of Bogiston nearby holds a memorial site for Sheikh Khovendi at-Tahur and Ubaydulla Akhror, two influential figures in Sufi tradition.
