Huaca Melgarejo

Huaca Melgarejo is an archaeological site in La Molina featuring structures built from adobe clay bricks. The complex contains large containment walls, small chambers, ramps, stairs, and benches arranged across multiple levels.

This complex was built between 300 and 600 CE as a ritual and administrative center of the Lima culture. It was strategically positioned along an irrigation canal and served political and religious control over surrounding areas.

This sacred site held religious meaning for the early Lima people who performed ritual activities within its chambers. Visitors can still observe the carefully designed rooms that were built for ceremonial purposes.

The site is located on La Fontana Avenue in the Santa Patricia II neighborhood and is freely accessible daily. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since exploring the location involves navigating different elevation levels.

This complex played a role during the War of the Pacific in 1881 when Chilean troops used its elevated position for military operations. This historical event made the site an important location in the region's 19th-century history.
