Fort IV, 19th century military fort in Toruń, Poland
Fort IV is a 19th century military fort in Toruń with two-story barracks blocks, powder magazines, and ammunition storage connected by an extensive network of underground corridors. The complex is surrounded by earthen ramparts with a dry moat and includes preserved observation positions for artillery.
The fort was constructed between 1878 and 1884 as part of a larger Prussian defensive system surrounding Toruń. It was built during a period when new fortification techniques were being developed and represented military strategy of the late 19th century.
The fort preserves its military past through guided tours where staff members wear period uniforms while leading visitors through underground passages. This approach helps visitors connect with the daily life of soldiers who once served here.
The fort is open daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM and offers access to all areas of the underground fortifications. Visitors should prepare for narrow passages and bring a flashlight, as the underground areas have limited natural light.
The underground sections were equipped with advanced ventilation systems designed to ensure soldier safety in confined spaces. These technical features show how late 19th century fortification design incorporated practical solutions for long-term occupation.
