Praia do Beliche, Beach on the western Algarve coast, Portugal
Praia de Beliche is a beach between Lagos and Sagres on the western Atlantic coast within Vicentine Coast Natural Park, surrounded by steep limestone cliffs. Sand area divides into two sections that expose or cover rock formations depending on tide levels.
In the late Middle Ages, this coast served as a departure point for expeditions along the African coast during the Age of Discovery. Henry the Navigator established a fortress nearby that gathered navigators and cartographers.
The beach serves as a gathering point for international surfers who come together to ride the waves generated by Atlantic currents.
The descent to the beach follows a stone staircase that winds between rock walls and can become slippery when wet. Waves are often strong in autumn and winter, while summer months offer calmer water and lifeguard presence.
One part of the beach attracts people who treat clothing as optional, while the other section draws couples and families watching sunset over open ocean. Parking area above is small and fills quickly on sunny weekends.
