Church of the Theotokos of the Sign

The Church of the Theotokos of the Sign is an Orthodox cathedral with red walls, white decorative elements, and five domes arranged in traditional Russian style. The structure has a boat-like form and also houses the Romanov Chambers, which are now part of the State Historical Museum.

The cathedral was built between 1679 and 1684 on the former Romanov estate after Tsar Mikhail Romanov founded the Znamensky Monastery in 1631. It thus stands as a direct link to the early history of the Romanov dynasty and its religious traditions.

The cathedral serves as an active place of worship where the venerated icon of the Mother of God of the Sign draws visitors seeking spiritual connection. This sacred image remains central to the religious life and identity of the place today.
