Ruokko House is a two-story corner building at 100 Grecheskaya Street featuring architectural elements from the third quarter of the 19th century. The building later housed a greenhouse and flower shop, marking a shift from its earlier function as a music instruction center.
Italian merchant David Ruokko purchased the residence in the 1880s from merchant Konstantin Mussuri. He transformed it into a center for music instruction.
The house served as a place for music instruction, where Italian merchant David Ruokko taught violin including to members of the Chekhov family. Traveling artists also used the building as lodging during their stays in the city.
The building sits at a corner location on the central Grecheskaya Street and is easy to locate. You can view the house from the outside to appreciate its characteristic 19th-century architecture and corner design.
David Ruokko's son Evgeny trained in violin at this house and later became engaged to Evgenia Savelyeva, daughter of a friend of Anton Chekhov. This connection reveals how closely the family was tied to Taganrog's literary circles.
