Chekov Theatre, Federal cultural heritage theatre in Taganrog, Russia.
The Chekhov Theatre is a performing arts venue in the center of Taganrog, Russia, with a facade modeled after Milan's La Scala opera house. The building contains several stage spaces used for dramatic works, operas, and other theatrical productions.
The theatre opened in 1866, built after a stock company raised the funds needed for its construction, following a design by architect Londeron. It was one of the first permanent theatre buildings in the region.
The theatre takes its name from Anton Chekhov, the playwright who was born in Taganrog and grew up in this city. Attending a performance here often means seeing works connected to his writing or to the Russian theatrical tradition he helped shape.
The theatre sits in the center of Taganrog and is easy to reach on foot from most of the city's main points. Arriving a little before the performance starts gives you time to look around the building before taking your seat.
Since 1980, the theatre has hosted a yearly festival called 'In the Birthplace of Anton Chekhov' that brings theatre groups from many countries to perform on its stages. It is one of the few theatre festivals in Russia that regularly welcomes foreign companies.
