Центральные бани, Historic bathhouse in Teatralny Passage, Moscow, Russia
The Central Baths is a large bathhouse complex located in Teatralny Passage in Moscow that combines classical, baroque, and rococo architectural elements. The structure was designed by architects Semen Eibushitz and Lev Kekushev and includes multiple floors with varied bathing and leisure facilities.
Moscow merchant Gerasim Khludov commissioned construction of this bathhouse complex in 1881, with the full facility completed by 1893. The project was created to rival the already-successful Sanduny Baths in the city.
Originally called the Chinese Baths, this facility served as a gathering place for Moscow's wealthy merchants, bankers, and cultural figures. Visitors came not just to bathe but to socialize in a space that attracted the city's influential people.
The facility can be reached on foot from the Bolshoi Theatre as it is situated in the theater district area. Visitors should check in advance which specific bathing sections and amenities are currently available before planning their visit.
This bathhouse housed Russia's first mechanized laundry facility and featured heated indoor swimming pools. The luxurious wooden interiors were decorated with gold leaf, giving the complex an exceptionally refined appearance.
