Riyadh Water Tower, Water tower in Al Futah district, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Riyadh Water Tower is a cylindrical concrete structure rising 61 meters (200 feet) tall with two water storage tanks of different sizes inside. The main tank holds 12,000 cubic meters of water at 51 meters above ground, while a secondary tank stores 350 cubic meters for emergencies.
Swedish architect Sune Lindström designed the tower in 1969, drawing inspiration from Sweden's Svampen water tower for its structural approach. Construction was completed in 1971 and the structure has defined Riyadh's skyline since then.
The tower marks Riyadh's transformation from a desert settlement into a modern city. It represents the infrastructure investments that changed daily life for residents during the 20th century.
The tower is visible from various points around the Al Futah district and serves as a clear landmark for navigation. Visit early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are more comfortable for exploring the surrounding area.
The tower was built on the former site of a demolished casino located near Murabba Palace. A complete repaint in 1997 marked the centennial of the Battle of Riyadh with a symbolic refresh of the structure.
