Lower Cascades

Lower Cascades is a waterfall in Hanging Rock State Park that drops from Cascade Creek over a stone edge into a shallow basin surrounded by rock formations. The water flows continuously throughout the year, creating a natural pool at its base.

Access to this waterfall was developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built trails and facilities throughout Hanging Rock State Park. This work opened the site to public recreation and helped establish it as a visitor destination.

The waterfall serves as a place where visitors observe local plant and animal life in their natural setting. The area reflects how people connect with this landscape through recreation and exploration.

The trail to the waterfall is short but includes many stairs, so sturdy shoes with good grip are essential for safe passage. The path can become slippery during wet weather, making careful footing important for the descent and return.

The pool below maintains cool water year-round even on hot summer days, allowing visitors to wade and swim in the basin. This natural cooling effect makes it a refreshing escape during the warmest months.
