Upper Cascades

Upper Cascades is a waterfall in Hanging Rock State Park featuring multiple ledges where water descends through thick forest and collects in natural basins. The cascade flows across quartzite rock formations at different elevations, creating a layered effect as it moves downward.

The waterfall served as a water source for Native American communities long before the state park was established in 1936. The area became protected as the park was created to preserve its natural features.

The Upper Cascades attracts photographers and artists who document the seasonal changes of water flow and surrounding plant life.

The trail to the waterfall is short and well-maintained with stone steps and railings guiding you downward. Wear shoes with good grip as the surface can be wet and slippery, especially after rain.

Water dropping over quartzite formations creates distinct patterns that change based on rainfall amounts throughout different seasons.
