Chemung Canal Bank Building, Bank building in Elmira, New York, United States

The Chemung Canal Bank Building at 415 East Water Street features brick construction with stepped gables, Greek revival elements, and Traditional Federal styling.

Built in 1833 as the original home of Chemung Canal Trust Company, this structure operated as a bank for seventy-six years before housing law offices.

The building now functions as the Chemung Valley History Museum, containing the region's most extensive collection of local historical artifacts and documents.

The second floor houses the Booth library, providing public access to research materials and archives related to regional history.

The 1903 renovation added mahogany counters, terrazzo flooring, two currency vaults, coupon booths, and a ventilation system designed by Pierce & Bickford architects.
