Arnot Art Museum, Art museum in Elmira, New York, US
The Arnot Art Museum is housed in a Greek Revival mansion on Lake Street and displays European and American art collections across spacious galleries. The building features classical architectural details that provide an elegant setting for viewing the artworks.
The museum was established in 1913 when collector Matthias Hallenback Arnot bequeathed his residence and art collection to the City of Elmira. This generous gift allowed the community to develop one of the region's significant art institutions.
The collection displays paintings by European masters from the 17th through 19th centuries and American works from the 19th and 20th centuries. These artworks reflect the taste of wealthy collectors from the late 1800s and their interest in academic and historical painting.
The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Saturday from noon to 5 PM. Visitors should plan enough time to walk through the galleries, as the collections are quite extensive.
The building underwent major improvements in the 1890s with gas lighting installation and a large skylight designed to illuminate the artworks. These technical upgrades reveal how the residence originally functioned as a home before its conversion into a museum space.
