Goose Eye Mountain

Goose Eye Mountain is a two-peaked summit in Maine that rises above 3,800 feet, with its North and South peaks separated by a natural col. Steep trails wind through dense maple and birch forests, opening onto exposed granite ledges near the ridgeline.

The mountain became part of the Appalachian Trail network in 1937, linking Maine's remote wilderness to a broader eastern mountain corridor. This connection transformed it from an isolated peak into a destination along a recognized long-distance hiking route.

Local hiking groups maintain the Wright Trail and Carlo Col Trail, organizing regular maintenance sessions to preserve access for future generations.

Navigation to the trailheads requires detailed maps or GPS devices because logging roads are poorly marked and access points are easy to miss from Success Pond Road. Conditions can turn muddy or slippery after rain, so proper footwear is important year-round.

The connected two-peak system creates a col between the North and South summits where rare alpine plants thrive in an unexpected microhabitat. This high-altitude plant community is unusual for the region and draws the attention of nature enthusiasts.
