Samuel J. Tilden House, Gothic Revival residence in Gramercy Park, Manhattan, US
The four-story sandstone building features pink marble entrance surrounds and horizontal stringcourses adorned with shiny stone material at 14-15 Gramercy Park South.
Samuel J. Tilden, governor of New York and presidential candidate in 1876, resided in this house from 1860 until his death in 1886.
Architect Calvert Vaux transformed two 1845 row houses into this Victorian Gothic residence with Italian Renaissance elements between 1881 and 1884.
Since 1906, the National Arts Club has maintained its headquarters in this building, preserving numerous Victorian features including parquet floors and floor-to-ceiling wood paneling.
During political tensions, the house incorporated steel rolling doors and an underground escape tunnel for the safety of its prominent resident.
