Lake Ridge Island Mounds
Lake Ridge Island Mounds, Archaeological site near Russells Point, Ohio
Lake Ridge Island Mounds is an archaeological site featuring four small earthen mounds distributed across roughly five acres in the northern section of the area. These formations show traces of construction methods used by Native Americans and provide insights into their building practices.
The mounds were created by cultures active in this region during prehistoric times and are part of Ohio's archaeological heritage. The Ohio Historical Society documented the site in the 1970s, recording its excellent preservation without disturbance from artifact collectors.
The mounds reflect characteristics of Hopewell culture, suggesting ties to groups who kept distance from major settlement centers. Visitors can observe how these structures blend into the surrounding landscape in ways that reveal the builders' relationship with their environment.
The site is located within Indian Lake State Park and is easily accessible from State Route 368, which curves around the eastern edge. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and wear comfortable footwear to fully explore the mounds.
The four mounds are remarkably modest in size, with heights around one meter and diameters of about twelve meters. Because of these humble dimensions, they are easily overlooked by the untrained eye and resemble natural terrain formations.
