Dunns Pond Mound, Native American burial mound in Washington Township, Ohio.
Dunns Pond Mound is an archaeological site in Washington Township, Ohio, located at the southeastern corner of Indian Lake. The earthen mound sits at the junction of Mohawk and Mound Avenue and marks the remains of a burial structure.
The Hopewell culture built this earthen mound between 300 BCE and 600 CE and used it as a burial site for roughly nine centuries. The construction reveals the sophisticated building techniques of this early society.
The mound was part of a larger group of structures that archaeologists identified and documented in 1914. Its position along the lake shore made this location particularly meaningful to the people who used it.
The site is now protected by fencing and access is restricted to the public. Visitors should check in advance about what areas are open, since the former walking trails have been removed.
The landscape around the mound was dramatically reshaped in 1860 when a dam was built on the Miami River. Farmland became lake bottom and hills became islands, completely transforming the geography of this archaeological location.
