Mount Hancock

Mount Hancock rises to about 4,420 feet in the Pemigewasset Wilderness area and is characterized by dense forests and rocky slopes. The terrain is steep and varied, with scattered boulders and narrow trails winding through the landscape.

The mountain was named after John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence during the American Revolution. This naming choice reflects the historical importance of early American figures.

The mountain attracts hikers who pursue the personal goal of climbing all qualifying peaks in New Hampshire, making it part of a broader hiking tradition in the region. This shared objective brings many visitors to the White Mountains throughout the year.

The hike begins from the Kancamagus Highway via a loop trail that covers several miles and takes most of a day to complete. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are essential, as the terrain can be slippery and conditions can change quickly.

The summit actually consists of two distinct peaks connected by a ridge, offering hikers two separate climbing experiences on the same outing. Many visitors add the second peak to their journey, extending the adventure.
