The mountain received its name from Susannah Gale, whose property marked the starting point of the Gale River, appearing on maps since 1853.
The mountain forms part of the White Mountain 4000 Footer List, drawing hikers who aim to complete this collection of New Hampshire peaks.
The Gale River Trail from the northwest provides the main access route, leading to Galehead Hut before connecting with the Frost Trail to the summit.
The mountain drainage system splits three ways, feeding into the Connecticut River, Merrimack River, and Pemigewasset River watersheds.
