Profile House, Palace hotel in Franconia Notch, United States

Profile House was a palace hotel situated on 65 acres in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, with views toward Mount Lafayette and the Kinsman Mountain Range. The property featured a working farm, power plant, and boating facilities connected by a narrow-gauge railroad that served the northern guests.

The hotel was constructed in 1852 and operated under multiple owners until its final season. A fire destroyed the main structure, leaving only the train depot building standing as a reminder of its former presence.

The hotel ran its own post office, telegraph office, barbershop, billiard hall, bowling alley and souvenir shops, and housed staff in the former Lafayette House. Twenty cottages linked by covered walkways let wealthy guests spend the whole summer on the grounds. A farm with dairy cows and a large greenhouse supplied the kitchen.

The hotel site lies just south of the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway parking lot, and the old railroad bed now carries a bicycle and pedestrian trail in summer and a groomed snowmobile trail in winter, with much of it under U.S. Route 3. The fish hatchery that once stocked the hotel's trout pond stands east of Interstate 93 and is visible from the highway.

The hotel's name came from the Old Man of the Mountain, a rock profile that surveyors discovered in 1805. The hotel owned thousands of acres in Franconia Notch, including the Old Man itself, The Basin, The Pool and The Flume. The stone face was later lost, but its outline still appears on New Hampshire licence plates.
