Mount Flume, Mountain summit in White Mountains, New Hampshire, United States.
Mount Flume is a mountain summit in the Franconia Range of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, rising to about 4,300 feet (1,310 m). Its upper slopes are rocky and open, while the lower sections are covered in dense forest.
The White Mountains became a popular destination for hikers and nature seekers from East Coast cities in the mid-1800s. The growth of roads and inns across the region opened summits like this one to a wider public for the first time.
The summit is one of 48 peaks on the White Mountain 4000-Footers list, a personal goal that many hikers in New England work toward over several seasons. Completing the full list earns official recognition from the Appalachian Mountain Club.
The climb demands good fitness and experience on rocky terrain, as some sections require actual scrambling, especially along the Flume Slide route. Sturdy footwear and proper gear are essential, since weather in the White Mountains can change quickly.
The summit sits right on the western boundary of the Pemigewasset Wilderness, one of the largest protected forest areas in the northeastern United States. From the top, you can look in one direction at marked trails and in the other at forest that has no maintained paths at all.
