Overton Lodge, Masonic lodge in Rogersville Historic District, Tennessee, US
Overton Lodge is a Masonic organization housed in a Federal-style building from around 1840 that once served as the Bank of Tennessee. The structure stands on Courthouse Square and holds the designation of Number 5 under Tennessee's Grand Lodge.
The organization was founded in 1805 and named after John Overton, a Tennessee Supreme Court justice who served alongside Andrew Jackson. It continued operations throughout the Civil War when most other Masonic lodges in the region ceased their activities.
The lodge functions as a gathering place for ritual ceremonies and community service projects that remain visible in local life. Members participate in charitable work that connects them directly to the needs of neighbors and residents.
The building sits in downtown on Courthouse Square in an easily recognizable historic structure. Visitors should understand that this is a private gathering space with access dependent on membership or special arrangements.
The building was originally constructed as a bank and has maintained its architectural character over more than two centuries. This transformation shows how historic structures in town have found new purposes while keeping their original appearance.
