Silver Run Falls, Waterfall in Nantahala National Forest, North Carolina
Silver Run Falls is a waterfall in Nantahala National Forest that cascades over granite rocks into a wide pool. The base of the falls opens into a sandy beach area surrounded by thick forest growth.
This area became part of Nantahala National Forest when the forest was established in the early 1900s. The creation of the protected forest land ensured the waterfall and surrounding woodland remained undisturbed.
Local residents gather at Silver Run Falls during summer months to swim and socialize in the cool mountain waters of Jackson County.
The waterfall is reached by a short flat walk of about 500 feet from the parking area on NC-107. The nearby parking accommodates a small number of vehicles on both sides of the road.
The pool at the base of the falls contains sparkly fragments of mica that shine when sunlight hits the clear mountain water. These reflective mineral pieces are visible throughout the basin and create a shimmering effect.
