Upper Whitewater Falls, Waterfall in Nantahala National Forest, North Carolina.

Upper Whitewater Falls is a tiered waterfall in Nantahala National Forest, Jackson County, North Carolina, dropping over granite rock faces through dense forest. The water falls in several distinct steps, each forming its own plunge before continuing down the slope.

The falls were brought into Nantahala National Forest in the early 20th century, which led to the construction of paths and viewing platforms for public use. Before that, the Whitewater River valley was a gathering place for the Cherokee, who used it for trade and ceremonies.

The waterfall holds significance in the history of the Cherokee Nation, who gathered in the Whitewater River valley for ceremonies and trade. Walking to the viewing decks today, visitors experience a landscape deeply rooted in Indigenous presence and tradition.

A paved walkway connects the parking area to the upper viewing platform, and stairs lead down to a lower deck that offers a different angle on the falls. The lower deck takes more effort to reach, but it puts you much closer to the water.

The falls run at a steady pace all year because the watershed sits at high elevation and drains a large forested area that holds water well. Even in dry summer months, the flow rarely drops to a trickle.
