Upper Whitewater Falls

Upper Whitewater Falls is a waterfall in Nantahala National Forest that descends in multiple tiers over granite slopes surrounded by thick forest. The water rushes down through several distinct drops, creating a continuous flow of cascades from top to bottom.

The falls became incorporated into Nantahala National Forest during the early 20th century, opening the site to public visitors. This transition led to the construction of pathways and viewing platforms that remain in use today.

The waterfall holds significance in the history of the Cherokee Nation, who gathered in the Whitewater River valley for ceremonies and trade. Walking to the viewing decks today, visitors experience a landscape deeply rooted in Indigenous presence and tradition.

The upper viewing platform is accessible from the parking area via a paved walkway, with stairs leading down to a lower platform for different vantage points. Both areas offer good sightlines, though the lower platform requires more effort to reach.

The waterfall maintains steady flow throughout every season because the watershed sits at high elevation with consistent water sources. This reliability makes it a dependable destination regardless of when you visit.
