Spring Point Ledge Light, Historic lighthouse in South Portland, United States
The cylindrical cast-iron tower stands at the end of a granite breakwater, featuring a fifth-order Fresnel lens and a black lantern room.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers constructed this maritime beacon in 1897 to protect ships entering Portland Harbor from dangerous underwater ledges.
The Spring Point Ledge Light Trust maintains this National Register of Historic Places structure, preserving its maritime heritage for future generations.
Visitors can reach the lighthouse by walking along the 900-foot granite breakwater from the grounds of Southern Maine Community College.
This structure remains the only caisson-style lighthouse in Maine that retains its original lower gallery and canopy accessible to the public.
