WIVB-TV Tower, Television tower in Colden, New York, US.
The WIVB-TV Tower is a steel mast structure standing about 322 meters tall in an open field near Colden. The design uses multiple guy cables anchored to the ground to keep the tall antenna stable and transmitting signals across the region.
This broadcasting tower was built in 1948 by the Buffalo Evening News and became one of the world's tallest structures at that time. Its construction marked the beginning of television service in the western New York area.
The tower supports Channel 4, which became a primary news source for western New York since television arrived in the region. Local residents grew accustomed to receiving information and entertainment through signals transmitted from this single structure.
The tower sits in open farmland where it remains visible from nearby roads, but the site is not accessible to the public due to broadcasting equipment and safety regulations. Visitors can see it from a distance along country roads in the area.
A radio station called WBKV also transmits from this site at double the power level normally allowed in the northeastern United States. This exceptional broadcasting strength required special authorization.
