Quarters 1, historic officer's quarters located at Fort Monroe, Hampton, Virginia

Quarters 1 is a three-story structure built in the early 1800s at Fort Monroe to house military officers, later expanded with two-story wings on either side. Inside, the building features a curved staircase beneath a dome and includes an octagonal room added in the 1870s, while front porches with decorative railings offer views across the fort's grounds.

Built in 1819, the structure served as both residence and command center for nearly 90 years until 1907 when a new commander relocated. During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln used the building while planning military actions, making it a significant location in American history.

The building displays federal-style architecture from the early 1800s with balanced windows and simple decoration that reflect the order and harmony valued in military life of that period. Walking around the porches and rooms, visitors sense how officers organized their daily routines and family life within the fort's structured community.

The site is open to the public where you can explore the grounds and observe the building's exterior architecture and design. The location sits on a small property within Fort Monroe and can easily be combined with visits to other historic sites nearby on foot.

The northern wing was built in 1823 as a completely separate building with a large kitchen and water cistern below, only later connected to the main building in 1871. This initially independent addition is a rare example of how early military structures expanded and adapted over decades.
