Augusta Savage House and Studio, Historic house and sculpture studio in Kingston, United States
Augusta Savage House and Studio is a two-story timber-frame residence with Greek Revival features located in Kingston. A separate single-story studio building with a shed roof completes the property and served as her workspace for sculpture.
The artist purchased the property in 1945 and used it as her working studio until her death in 1962. During these years, she created works that emerged from the Harlem Renaissance period and established her importance as a sculptor.
The studio served as a place where Augusta Savage shared her artistic skills and gathered a community of learners around her work. The space itself reflects how this location functioned in artistic education and the creation of works that moved beyond her time.
The location sits on Old Route 32 and can be visited on foot, with the architecture clearly visible from the outside. Visitors should check ahead since access and visiting hours may be limited.
More than 160 works created by Savage in this studio were lost or destroyed over time. This loss makes the surviving pieces and the memory of her creative process at this location especially meaningful.
