St. Margaret's Home, Historic orphanage in Red Hook, New York, US.

Description

St. Margaret's Home is a two-story brick building in Red Hook with Italian Villa style architecture, brownstone trim, fluted cast iron columns, and French windows. The structure displays characteristic mid-19th century details, including a double round-arched entrance along South Broadway.

History

The building was constructed in 1852 and served as an Episcopal orphanage under the patronage of Margaret Rebecca Armstrong Astor. It closed in 1872 after providing care to children from the Episcopal community for two decades.

Culture

Practical

The site sits in an accessible area of Red Hook with proximity to major transportation routes. Visitors can observe the exterior and architectural details from the sidewalk without needing specialized knowledge or advance planning.

Did you know?

The round arched double entrance and architectural details reflect the elevated standards of institutional design during the mid-nineteenth century.
