Wheeling Historic District

The Wheeling Historic District encompasses roughly 200 buildings spread across the city center, constructed mainly in Greek Revival and Victorian styles that give the area a cohesive character. The architecture ranges from simple commercial structures to elaborate civic and financial institutions.

The district originated on the site of an early military installation and grew into a major commercial hub from the early 1800s onward. Its buildings document the city's development through several generations of growth and prosperity.

A striking feature is the Capitol Theatre built in 1928, which still hosts performances and retains much of its original stage equipment and acoustic design. The nearby passenger terminal from 1907 preserves the era when rail travel connected this region to the broader nation.
