Civic Park Historic District
Civic Park Historic District, Historic district in Flint, United States.
The Civic Park Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Flint containing approximately 1,010 structures across 280 acres. Most houses were built in 1919 and 1920 and are located between Welch and Brownell Boulevards and along Trumbull, Dupont, and Dartmouth Streets.
General Motors founded the Modern Housing Corporation in 1919 to build houses for employees, completing over 600 residences in just five months. This rapid development was a response to the needs of the company's growing workforce.
The neighborhood displays various architectural styles such as bungalows and Craftsman houses with brick, stucco, or wood exteriors. Walking through the streets, you notice different design details that show how residents personalized their homes.
The area spreads across multiple city blocks and is best explored on foot to appreciate the architecture of the various houses. There are no major barriers or obstacles preventing a walk through the neighborhood.
About 80 houses in the area were built by General Motors workers following their own designs rather than standard plans. These worker-designed homes give the neighborhood a special variety in its details.
