Robert Walton Goelet had the building constructed in 1932 on land where his family had previously owned a private mansion. The project turned a residential property into a commercial building that has remained in use ever since.
The lobby displays the Goelet family crest, a direct reference to the family that commissioned the building. The walls are lined with six types of marble from different countries, making the entrance feel unlike most office buildings in the area.
The building sits on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan and is easy to reach by public transit. When entering, look for the S-shaped lobby corridor that leads toward the elevators, as it gives a good sense of the interior layout.
