Camp Greentop, Summer camp in Frederick County, United States
Camp Greentop is a recreation facility in Frederick County spread across 200 acres within Catoctin Mountain National Park, offering accommodations and outdoor activity spaces. The grounds include swimming areas, riding stables, arts facilities, and sports grounds, all designed with full accessibility in mind.
The camp was founded in 1937 through President Roosevelt's New Deal legislation as one of the first residential camps in America designed for people with disabilities. This pioneering approach emerged from a broader movement to expand opportunities and services for this population.
The facility serves children and adults with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities through specialized programming that shapes the rhythm of daily life. This inclusive setting allows visitors to participate in activities alongside others, creating a community where everyone contributes.
The facility maintains a 2-to-1 staff-to-camper ratio with 24-hour nursing support available on site. Daily schedules include swimming, arts and crafts, horseback riding, and sports to accommodate different interests and abilities.
The Work Experience Program allows young people with disabilities to build job skills through supervised tasks around the camp. This hands-on work gives them real responsibility and practical abilities that extend beyond their time here.
