Hawk Island County Park, County park in Lansing, Michigan, US
Hawk Island County Park is a county park on East Cavanaugh Road in the southern part of Lansing, Michigan, covering around 100 acres (about 40 hectares). It has a swimming lake with a beach, paved walking paths, a playground, picnic shelters, and hills used for snow tubing in winter.
The land was once known as the Sablain Gravel Pit, an active extraction site before it was transformed into a park. It is considered the newest addition to Lansing's county park system, and native plantings now cover much of the area that was once bare ground.
In summer, the beach draws families who come to swim or sit by the water. The Splash Pad is a favorite spot for children on hot days, and the area around it fills up quickly on weekends.
The park opens for pedestrians shortly before sunrise and for vehicles at 8:00 am, closing at sunset throughout the year. Hours can change in winter depending on snow conditions, and the park closes early or entirely on some holidays, so checking ahead is a good idea. A vehicle entry fee applies year-round.
The park's snow tubing hills are purpose-built for winter use and come with a warming lodge where visitors can take a break from the cold. Dogs are welcome throughout the park but are not allowed near the beach or Splash Pad area, and must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet (about 1.8 meters).
