Rangayyanadurga Four–horned antelope Wildlife Sanctuary, Wildlife refuge in Jagalur, Karnataka, India.
Rangayyanadurga Four-Horned Antelope Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife refuge located near Jagalur in the Davanagere district of Karnataka, dedicated to protecting the rare four-horned antelope. The terrain is a mix of dry grassland, scrubland, and rocky hillsides typical of the Deccan plateau.
The sanctuary was officially declared a protected area in 2011, after decades of habitat loss caused by farming and grazing had pushed the four-horned antelope toward local extinction. The designation was a direct response to the sharp drop in the animal's numbers in this part of Karnataka.
The four-horned antelope that gives this sanctuary its name is the only hoofed animal known to grow four horns, which makes spotting one in the wild feel genuinely memorable. Villages around the sanctuary have long relied on the surrounding forest for firewood and grazing, and that relationship shapes how conservation is approached here today.
Visiting between November and February gives the best chance of seeing wildlife, as the dry season keeps vegetation low and tracks easier to follow. Early morning and late afternoon are the times when the antelopes are most likely to be active and visible.
The four-horned antelope, locally called chousingha, is the only wild mammal in the world known to regularly grow four horns, with the front pair often no larger than small bumps. Only the males carry all four horns, while females grow none at all.
