Kangla Sanathong, Historical entrance gate in Imphal, India
Kangla Sanathong is the western entrance gate to Kangla Fort and displays traditional Meitei building techniques from Manipur's architectural heritage. The gate features structural elements characteristic of the region and serves as the main passage through which visitors enter the fort grounds.
The gate served as the main entrance to Kangla Fort, which was the seat of power for the Ningthouja dynasty from 33 CE until 1891. The site lost its administrative role after this period but endured as a historical landmark.
The name Sanathong means 'golden door' in the Meitei language, reflecting how locals valued this entrance in their architectural tradition. The structure shows building styles that were typical of Manipur and remain visible today.
The site is accessible year-round and serves as the entry point to the Kangla Fort grounds with well-maintained walkways. An information board at the entrance helps visitors understand the layout of the entire fort and available routes within.
A bronze statue of King Nara Singh stands at the western entrance, commemorating the rulers who once passed through this ceremonial gateway. The sculpture marks an important point where history becomes visible to those exploring the fort.
