Shirui National Park, National park in Ukhrul district, Manipur, India
Shirui National Park is a protected area in Ukhrul district, Manipur, spanning from lower elevations with dense tropical forests to higher mountain regions at around 1700 meters. The terrain transitions gradually from thick vegetation in the valleys to cooler temperate forests near the peaks.
The Indian government established this protected area in 1982 to safeguard the local ecosystem and the indigenous Shirui lily species. This action marked the beginning of formal protection for an extremely rare flower found nowhere else on Earth.
Local communities in nearby villages rely on traditional knowledge about medicinal plants and forest resources that grow in this region. Their daily practices reflect a deep connection to the land that surrounds them.
The period from November to March offers the best conditions for visiting and observing wildlife in their natural habitat. Access to the park is easiest through Ukhrul town, which serves as the gateway to the protected area.
The park contains the only natural habitat of the Shirui lily, a flower that grows exclusively in this region and nowhere else in the world. This rare species now serves as the state flower of Manipur, making it a living symbol of the region's botanical heritage.
