Chernihiv Museum of Ukrainian Antiquities

The Chernihiv Museum of Ukrainian Antiquities is a history and art museum displaying around 230,000 objects that represent the material and spiritual culture of Ukraine. The collection includes archaeological finds, craft works, and artworks by important figures, housed within a restored mansion known as the V. Tarnovskyi House.

The museum was founded in 1902 when the provincial council of Chernihiv decided to protect local cultural treasures. It merged with other institutions in 1925 to form the Chernihiv State Museum, growing into one of the region's major repositories of Ukrainian history.

The museum holds a significant collection of works and personal belongings of the celebrated Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, including correspondence, sketches, and everyday items from his life. Visitors get a direct sense of his creative life by viewing the artworks and writings that document his legacy.

The museum is located on Shevchenko Street 63 and is easily reached by public transportation from Krasna Square and the main railway station. Plan to spend several hours exploring, as the collection is large and offers many details to discover.
