Chernihiv Stadium, Football stadium in Chernihiv, Ukraine
Chernihiv Stadium is a sports facility with two opposing grandstands offering a combined capacity of 14,000 seats. The western section features modern plastic seating while the eastern stands retain traditional wooden benches for spectators.
The facility was built in 1936 on the grounds of a former city garden and required reconstruction during the 1950s following damage sustained in World War II. This rebuilding established it as a central sports hub for the city.
The venue carries Gagarin's name since 1961, commemorating the cosmonaut's visit to Chernihiv in 1964. For locals, this place remains a gathering point where community sports events and celebrations have traditionally brought people together.
The venue is most easily reached on foot from various parts of the city with multiple access points available. Visitors should note that conditions may vary depending on ongoing events or maintenance work at the location.
Russian artillery strikes in March 2022 caused significant damage to the eastern stands, drawing international attention to the need for repair. German football club Borussia Dortmund subsequently offered support to assist with reconstruction efforts.
