Chernihiv Stadium, Football stadium in Chernihiv, Ukraine
Chernihiv Stadium is a sports stadium in Chernihiv, Ukraine, with two grandstands facing each other across the playing field. The western stand has plastic seats, while the eastern stand, fitted with wooden benches, was heavily damaged by artillery fire in 2022 and remains partly out of use.
The stadium was built in 1936 on the site of a former city garden, then rebuilt in the 1950s after serious damage during World War II. In the early 1960s it was named after the cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who had visited the city.
The venue carries Gagarin's name since 1961, commemorating the cosmonaut's visit to Chernihiv in 1964. For locals, this place remains a gathering point where community sports events and celebrations have traditionally brought people together.
The stadium sits close to the center of Chernihiv and can be reached on foot from many parts of the city. Since the eastern stand was damaged, it is worth checking in advance which areas of the venue are currently open to visitors.
After the March 2022 strikes, German football club Borussia Dortmund offered support for rebuilding the damaged eastern stand, an unusual gesture from a foreign sports club toward a war-affected venue. The offer drew attention to the stadium at a moment when few expected international sports solidarity to take this form.
