Basílica del Corazón de María, Antofagasta, Kirchengebäude in Chile
The Basílica del Corazón de María is a Gothic Revival church in Antofagasta distinguished by its twin bell towers and central dome overlooking the city. Its interior combines Gothic arches and Byzantine decorative elements throughout the nave and side chapels.
Claretian missionaries established a wooden church on this site in 1903, which was destroyed by fire in 1912. Construction of the current stone basilica began in 1913 and was completed in 1928.
The building is located on Lord Cochrane Street between Copiapó and 21 de Mayo in central Antofagasta and is easy to reach on foot. You can explore the interior freely and observe the architectural details at your own pace.
The copper statue of the Virgin Mary topping the dome was installed in 1997 after an earthquake damaged the original figure. This sculpture remains visible from many points across the city and serves as a local landmark.
