Muelle Salitrero Compañía Melbourne Clark

The Melbourne Clark Saltpeter Pier extends 198 meters into San Jorge Bay with a width of 15.8 meters, constructed of Oregon pine and American oak wood.

Built between 1872 and 1880, the pier facilitated saltpeter exports and served as a strategic landing point for Chilean troops during the 1879 Pacific War.

The structure represents the industrial heritage of northern Chile's saltpeter era, when the region exported minerals that transformed global agriculture.

The pier opens daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, featuring viewing platforms, benches, and glass floor sections that reveal the original structure below.

The 2015 restoration preserved the original rails while adding sports areas for nautical activities and special lighting systems that illuminate the historic cranes.
