The Underground, Wooden roller coaster in Adventureland, Altoona, US.
The Underground is a wooden roller coaster at Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa, built entirely inside a large themed building that simulates a mine environment. The track runs through two lift hills and a series of indoor scenes, keeping riders enclosed throughout the entire ride.
Custom Coasters International built the ride in 1996, making it one of the few indoor wooden coasters in the United States at the time. Years later, the track was fully rebuilt and new themed scenes were added to update the experience.
The ride moves through a series of lit scenes that recreate the look and feel of an old mining operation, drawing loosely on the working history of the American Midwest. The themed tunnels and figures give the whole experience the feeling of stepping into a story rather than just riding a coaster.
Because the entire ride is indoors, it is a good option on hot or rainy days when outdoor attractions may be less comfortable. Lines tend to be shorter early in the morning or toward the end of the day, so timing your visit around those windows can help.
Although the structure is built from wood, the ride feels much more like a dark ride than a typical wooden coaster because most of the track runs through near-total darkness or dimly lit scenes. That combination of wood construction and indoor theming is rare among coasters of this type.
