Heart Reef, Reef in Whitsundays, Australia
Heart Reef is a natural coral formation shaped like a heart, located within the Hardy Reef area of the Great Barrier Reef system. The structure is clearly visible from above and forms part of the larger reef complex in the Whitsundays region.
The coral formation was first documented in 1975 during aerial surveys of the Great Barrier Reef marine park. Since then, it has become an internationally recognized symbol of natural reef patterns.
The reef serves as a popular spot for marriage proposals, where couples choose helicopter flights to mark their commitment at this natural formation. Visitors often gather here to celebrate significant personal moments in a memorable setting.
Access is only possible by helicopter tours booked from Airlie Beach. Swimming and diving near the formation are prohibited to protect the coral structure.
The formation appears on tourism materials worldwide and is often considered one of the most photographed reef sites in the world. Its heart shape is so perfect that many people believe it was artificially created.
