Plage de Moya, White sand beach in Pamandzi, Mayotte.

Plage de Moya sits along the eastern coast of Mayotte with white sand shores bordered by native coastal plants and clear waters of the Indian Ocean. The bay has natural pools and shallow zones that make swimming and exploring easy.

This location marks the easternmost point of Mayotte, a French overseas territory that was once an independent sultanate before becoming part of France. Its modern development as a beach destination began after the territory joined the French administrative system.

Local women gather at the shore during low tide to fish using traditional methods that have been passed down through their families. These practices remain part of everyday coastal life and show how the community sustains itself from the ocean.

The beach is free to enter with no fees required, so visitors can come at any time that suits them. Guided boat trips can be arranged nearby to see dolphins, turtles, and other sea animals.

Between July and October, visitors can watch humpback whales passing close to the shore as they migrate through the Mozambique Channel. This natural migration makes the beach a special place for watching these ocean giants during those months.

Natural areas and beaches of Mayotte

Mayotte is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean with a varied landscape of volcanic lakes, sandy beaches, and protected natural areas. The islands host coral reefs, mangrove forests, and marine habitats that invite exploration. Historic mosques such as Tsingoni and busy fish markets display the island's cultural side, while viewpoints and waterfalls like Cascade de Soulou offer scenic views. On Petite-Terre, beaches such as Moya and Musicale sit near Dziani Dzaha Crater Lake, a notable body of water of volcanic origin. Mount Choungui on Grande-Terre offers hiking opportunities with views across the island. The Sentier des Baobabs leads through landscapes with ancient trees and shows the region's natural flora. The coastline draws visitors with many beaches including N'Gouja, Saziley, and Tahiti Beach, while nature reserves such as Saziley National Park and Chissioua M'bouzi Reserve shelter uncommon species. The M'Tsamboro Islands and Sable Blanc Islet are popular destinations for water sports and snorkeling. Longoni Harbor and smaller bays such as Chirongui Bay show the maritime life of island residents.
