Résidence du gouverneur, Historical monument in Dzaoudzi, Mayotte.
Résidence du gouverneur is a three-story residential building in Dzaoudzi with a rectangular footprint and encircling galleries on all sides. A distinctive horseshoe-shaped staircase dominates the interior, while the grounds hold original cannons and lampposts from the colonial period.
The structure was built between 1891 and 1892 from a prefabricated kit shipped from mainland France. It replaced the former palace of Sultan Andriantsoly that previously occupied the same site.
The grounds include a park with six historical lampposts and three cannons, with the oldest dating back to 1813.
The site is accessible from the street and visitors can observe the colonial architecture and exterior grounds. Understanding its history beforehand helps you appreciate the building's design and its role in Mayotte's past.
The metal structure uses a double-wall system that creates natural air circulation suited to tropical conditions. This design feature shows how engineers adapted European construction methods to Mayotte's climate needs.
